One afternoon, during their usual tea gathering, he lifted a simple clay cup and looked at it for a long time.

It was beautiful in its simplicity – soft earthy colors, a perfectly rounded shape.

The students waited eagerly to hear what he would say.

The monk smiled and said: “This cup is already broken.”

The students looked at each other in surprise – the cup was whole and untouched.

One young student could not hold back and asked: “Master, the cup isn’t broken. Why do you say that?”

Still smiling, the monk set the cup down and replied: “In my mind, this cup is already broken. Maybe tomorrow, maybe in a few years – but one day it will break. That is inevitable. When I accept this, I can fully appreciate it without clinging to it. I can enjoy my tea, knowing that its life is temporary.”

The students understood that he was not talking only about the cup.

The monk went on: “Everything in life is like this cup. No matter how beautiful or precious something is – it is fleeting. When we understand this, we can enjoy every moment, every relationship and every experience – knowing that it will pass.
