If You Love, Love Openly

Zen Stories

In a Zen temple, twenty monks and a single nun named Eshun spent their days in meditation, learning the practice from their Zen teacher.

Eshun was striking in her beauty, despite her shaved head and her simple robes.

More than one of the monks fell in love with her in secret.

One of them sent her a love letter, pressing her to meet him in private.

Eshun gave him no answer.

The next day, once the master had finished his talk to the group, Eshun stood up and turned to the monk who had written the letter:

“If your love for me is truly that great, come and hold me now.”

Reflection: Sincere love deserves courage and openness, whatever the circumstances. True feelings should not be hidden, because love is nothing to be ashamed of.
